Construction Details of Made-to-order Window Grilles

This picture shows the Classic "ogee" profile of our custom made window grilles.  The overall dimensions of the molding stock is 1/2" thick by 1 1/8" wide.  Our standard woods are Oak (mixed species) and Poplar, but we have access to pretty much any wood species that you might need.  Of course some may be more expensive than our standard price for average sized 9 lite mullions.  By the way, all of the following terms are correct for this product:  grids, grilles, mullions, muntins.  Although mullion technically refer to the woodwork which is used to hold individual panes of glass together in old fashioned divided lite windows, which is of course the look that our grilles simulate.

Our grid parts are joined by a rail and stile joint which is somewhat like a complex tongue and groove joint, where one part (the rail) is end coped to mate with the top profile of the stile and it's back cut.  This is a very strong and attractive glue joint which also helps to locate the parts during assembly.  Most cabinet door frames use a similar rail and stile construction.

These two pictures show the end cope on the rail and the back cut on the stile.

Assembly may require a small amount of persuasion with a mallet.  Glue should be applied to all mating surfaces, and any squeeze out should be immediately wiped off with a damp rag after assembly.  The assembled units should be carefully checked for square and allowed to dry before they are applied to windows.  By the way, we recommend that you use a high quality non expanding wood glue like Titebond or Elmer's and not any kind of expanding isocyanate glue (such as "Gorilla Glue") because it is just too messy for this kind of work.

Small orders of grilles will be shipped unassembled.  For orders of 20 or more grilles we will partially assemble, and finish your grilles in standard stain colors and two coats of conversion varnish at no extra cost.

In our shop we stain and finish grilles before assembly, and we recommend that you do the same thing if you order unfinished/unassembled units from us.  Finishing before assembly allows a good job to be done with much less labor than would be required to stain and finish already assembled units.  However care should be taken to avoid excessive finishing inside the end cope and back cut areas to allow good glue adhesion during assembly.
